Ready to recert

Recently the husband of a work friend got in a car accident.  We had very little news so I figured I would see if the EMS, Fire and Police radio bands had any info.  Although I didn't find the info I wanted the instant I heard the radio I wanted my EMT cert. back.

I want to be able to ride again....I mean of course I have a full first aid set in the back of the escape in case the need ever arises, but I want on an ambulance.

2 months...unacceptable

2 months since my last post???  Unacceptable.  I promise that the new and improved me will make updating a bigger priority!

So what have I done for the last two months?  A lot actually.  I feel like I am in a major time of transition at the moment.  For my whole life I have tried to handle things by myself.  I think I have finally come to the realization that I can't handle everything myself.  That being said, for the most part, the people I have reached out to have been fantastic.  So thanks everyone that has helped me over the past year.

So what is going through my mind you ask (well you didn't ask, but its my blog so you are going to get an answer anyway.)  Here is a pouring out of my head....

1. I am not over my Dad dying
2. Being a parent is awesome, but sometimes having a baby is a big pain in the ass.
3. I am sick of being screwed over (more on this later)
4. Self improvement has one keyword, SELF

A few facts

I do not update nearly enough.  Usually I only update if some political story happens to piss me off at the time, but I would really like to use this blog more as an outlet for all sections of my life, not just politics.  So lets lighten the mood with a little bit about me (not going to lie I stole this from a post that my friend The Sailing Foodie did a while ago)

I am married to a wonderful woman, have an awesome son (JW) and a slightly slow, but adorable black lab maddie

I love camping and the outdoors, but do not get out nearly enough.  Especially now that JW is born the outdoor time has been suffereing.  However now that he is getting bigger hopefully we will be able to get up to my favorite vacation spot.....Maine
My family has a small one room log cabin up there and if I could I would probably spend my entire life up there ( Somehow I don't think MW would appreciate that.)

Now some random facts...
1. I have been in three separate musicals and love to sing
2. I have a fascination with the lighting in restaurants, some seems to have way to many different types of lights to make ordering simple.
3. I work as the environmental coordinator for CSL International, currently collecting environmental data from 30 ocean going ships and 2 floating transshipment platforms
4. I went to a military-ish school and I am not ashamed to say that I miss it.
5. My car/house is always ready for an emergency (anything from a skinned knee up to the zombie apocalypse)
6. I have another blog where I chronicle being a new dad because I noticed the distinct lack of information for new dads online.
7. I am a libertarian.  No not a republican who wants to change their name, a true libertarian.  Small government involvement in everything, especially someones private rights.  Equal rights for all and a tax code that makes sense would make we wicked happy.
8. I am from right north of Boston (if the wicked didn't give it away) and I love New England!

Why is it Ronald McDonalds fault your kids eat junkfood?

I read this short article today about parents trying to get McDonalds to "retire" Ronald McDonald.  The reason?  Thats right the advertising of junk food is bad for kids.

I have one thing to say to those kinds of parents....Fuck yourself.  It is not a companies job to stop your kids from wanting their products.  Why don't you grow a set and tell them you.  YOU are the parent, YOU are the adult.  If your kids are fat (baring an actual medical issue) it is YOUR fault.  I am sorry if they are whining or whatever, but its YOUR job to deal with it, not McDonalds.

So in closing raise your own kids and stop trying to make others responsible for you being a lazy and shitty parents.  If you dont want your kids to get fat then dont buy them things like McDonalds all the time.

Why Rick Santorum makes me want to throw up

So obviously the republican field this election season is a bit...weak.  No one is garnering more than a quarter of the votes and it seems to me that no one can really front a strong enough campaign to take down Barack Obama.

That being said there is one specific republican cantidate that I would like to talk about....Rick Santorum.  Santorum is one of the most pompus, ridiculous and shitty public representatives that I have ever seen.  This is a guy that things that government and religion should be the same thing.  I am not saying that religion is bad, nor is politics, but they aren't (and shouldn't be) the same thing.  In fact there is a very specific law that says exactly that, the separation of church and state.  Now you have a guy who pretty much wants to institute the laws of the church.

That's not how the US system works dude!  The laws of this country are to be seperate from churches of any kind.

Also how can you be so vehemently against partial birth abortion when your own wife (authorized by the Santorums) had a partial birth abortion?  What it's ok to save your wife, but other people's wives doing it is horrible?

No good man.

calm down everyone

The last post was informational only, not trying to make anyone feel bad.  I def don't think people don't feel for me or anything like that.  I love all you guys!  Just emptying my head

My dad dying

I tired to think of a clever title for this post, but I just couldn't come up with anything.  I wanted to address the way my mind has been processing my dad dying as it seems there are only 2-3 people who have any idea whats going on in that crazy mind of mine.

First a little bit of background.
I was not super close to my dad at all.  He was a drunk that spent a good majority of my life (and most/all of my brothers) being drunk and irresponsible.  I was forced to jump up into the "man of the house" position early on in my life.  Although I like the way I turned out it was not fair to force a young person into a roll like that.  I was the only good male role model for my brother as it seemed like no other person in my family cared to involve themselves in "our" business.  I tried my best and everything seemed to work out ok in the end.

Our relationship hit lots of rocky parts, but was never necessarily bad.  I was kicked out of my house a couple of times in high school because I stood up to him.  Luckily I had great friends (especially SV(although she was SF then!) on a very rainy night) that helped me out.

Dad was arrested for DUI once in high school which really made me stop and think about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.  I saw this pity in peoples face which downright offended me.  I didn't (and still don't) need pity from anyone.  I make my own way and shit happens, so you deal and move on.

I went to Mass Maritime in large part because I wanted discipline in my life.  I didn't want to become what he was, an uncontrolled fool.  I went to MMA and thrived, loving the disciplined military lifestyle.  Back home DW suffered under a fool of a father, while I flourished.  That being said I did my best to assist when I was home, but I had moved on.

My parents got divorced my junior (I think) year in college and it was the BEST thing that could have happened.  Really it should have happened before, but at least now people were happy.  Of course my dad had zero idea what happened for a while, but at least we didn't have to deal with him.

The biggest blow for me was the fact that he showed up drunk to my college graduation from MMA.  I mean really?  You cant go 6 hours with out drinking and go to your sons college graduation?  Unreal.  He then got arrested again later that year for DUI at my cousins wedding.  At that point I wrote him off and said good luck I am going to do my own.

When we found out we were pregnant I of course called and told him.  He has stopped drinking at this point and was back working again.  He was genuinely excited for me, which was nice for once.  Things seemed to get better leading up to us having the baby.  He came out a couple weeks after we had JW and got to see him.  Then a week later he was dead.

A strange thing to deal with all of a sudden became a very real thing to deal with when I left MW with a 1.5 month JW to go and clean out his apartment.  The first time it was my mom, my aunt and myself.  The second time my brother and uncle came.  So I cleaned up all of the stuff he had accumulated over the years, cleaning around the area where he died.  It was very obvious where he had died and it was a strange thing to have to deal with.

The biggest wake up I have taken away from this experience is the reaction people had after teh funeral.  No one on either side of my family followed up with me and asked how I was doing, even when I had Christmas parties with both sides.  No one said anything, everyone just acted like nothing had happened.  The only family member to ask me how i was doing was MW mom.  Very rarely, if ever, do I name people in this blog, but I want to thank her.  Thank you Janet for reaching out to me, it really made me happy to know at least someone was thinking about how I was doing besides MW.

I did have a better response from friends. There were some that did not reach out at all, which really angered me.  I am not sure if I want to spend my time with people like that, but I do want to call out a couple of people that have really helped me.  BQ, AG, CG, MCC you guys are awesome.  MC made sure to keep in touch on a particular long voyage out to sea.  There were people who helped that I haven't named here so I appreciate them as well.

The biggest help has been MW.  She has been the most supportive and reassuring person I have ever seen.  Not only did she put up with me during everything, she knows me well enough to know when we just need to go out and talk about nothing.  Thanks Babe!!

Now this sounds like an extremely negative post but it isn't.  I feel very good about 2012!  I am still def dealing with everything and its still an odd feeling, but thats ok.  I have a fantastic family, good job and I am ready for 2012!  For your viewing pleasure here are some Christmas pics of JW!

Ready for Christmas!

I am pretty sure that Fraser Christmas rocked JW's world
